Airport Car Park Upgrades

A constrained site means Wellington International Airport Limited (WIAL) has to optimise every inch of space to provide all the facilities required of an international airport.

The car parks are no exception, and in August 2005 WIAL chose Impact to lead a rationalisation project that included a technology upgrade for car parking facilities.

The challenge was to carry out the physical on-site drainage, cobbling, kerbing and channelling around a 24/7 parking operation that included many different stakeholders. The result is an improved operation using world-class ticketing technology, and a car park that makes efficient use of a limited site.

The sub-projects included:

  • Pedestrian canopy
  • Car parking entries and exits (including barrier arms and ticket dispensers)
  • Bronze/Silver/Gold and Platinum parking
  • Koru Club valet
  • Staff parking
  • Taxi holding
  • Passenger drop-off
  • Signage (gantry – Stewart Duff Drive/way-finding signage)
  • Closed-circuit television
  • Pay on foot

Wellington Airport is in a growth phase, implementing its 2030 Master Plan which includes key areas of passenger and freight growth, terminal and runway development and integrated land use. In addition, the airport is a challenging environment, handling over five million passengers, 365 days per year and on a very compact site. Impact has always responded to our very challenging goals. Whether it is a retail fit out, or a $60 million terminal redevelopment, they constantly deliver. They provide genuine leadership to our projects, achieve outstanding results and are considered an integral part of our organisation.
