Owing to a significant increase in university student numbers and the number of students requiring accommodation, Victoria University of Wellington required further student accommodation to satisfy the demand.
Victoria University and Taradale Developments entered an agreement for student accommodation at the existing Stafford House, on The Terrace in Wellington. Taradale Developments appointed Impact Group to manage the project.
The existing building had to be converted into accommodation under a demanding timeframe, which was constrained by delays around the building purchase at the start of the project and the consequent occupation of the building by students for the last university term of the year.
Planning was carried out with Fletcher Construction and Impact over many months, and when construction started on site, 14 floors were demolished, refurbished and furnished in 20 weeks. Certainly a record in Wellington and it resulted in an Institute of Building Award in 2004.
