Fairfax Media is New Zealand’s largest media company, publishing nine daily newspapers, a stable of magazines and more than 60 community newspapers throughout New Zealand.
In 2007, Fairfax embarked on an $8 million installation of a state-of-the-art colour printing press at its lower North Island newspaper-printing site.
The project actually comprised five independent projects: installing the press; installing printing software; strengthening the building to ensure it was fit for the new press (which included removing the roof); reviewing and updating the power supply to ensure the press could run; and getting the old and new presses to ‘talk’ to each other for monotone and colour printing. All this with a key deliverable – no disruption to the delivery of a daily newspaper!
Impact’s relationship with Fairfax goes back to 2002, when Impact managed the design, build and relocation of 54 staff to the Majestic Centre. Impact also relocated the company’s central communications hub (requiring considerable risk management and planning) and, later, refurbished its editorial department while it continued to operate 24 hours a day.
“Impact have come to understand our business and always make it a priority to work closely with us as the client to achieve the best and most cost-effective results with minimal disruption to the production of a daily newspaper.”
- Paul Elenio, General Manager Fairfax Central Region
